Website Design Trends 2011

April 14, 2011

According to Jacqueline Thomas of Web Design Ledger, “2011 is not about beauty, it’s about function. The trends for this new year and emerging decade are responsive design, constant connection and virtual reality.”  Graphic designers and web designers alike are expanding their creativity and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in web site design for 2011.

Gone are the days of flash websites and complicated site navigation. In 2011 we are seeing web sites that embrace simpler colour schemes but more graphical depth, increased interactivity with the user, better use of photography and consistent interaction with social media (such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter).

Developing websites that are easily viewed on mobile units such as the Blackberry and iPhone is an emerging trend, as more and more people use their smart-phones to search for information and access websites on the road. Business owners of all stripes must pay attention to this trend or be left in the dust.

QR (Quick Response) bar codes, those quirky little square “thingys”, are popping up all over and their integration into website development makes smart business sense as people are looking for fast access to information. We’ve noticed an increase in the use of them on Realtors’ signs and marketing materials here on Vancouver Island. If you have a smart phone (like the iPhone) and a free QR reader, all you need to do is scan the QR bar code and it will pull up a secret message or even take you directly to a website with more information.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) continues to be crucial to the find-ability of a business website. If you are a Realtor in Nanaimo and people are searching on Google for “Nanaimo real estate agent” and your web site isn’t listed on the first page, you are not likely to be found. If you own a hair salon in the Comox Valley and people Google “Comox Valley hair salon” you want to be on the first page because searchers are less likely to go to page 2 or 3 of Google’s search results.

From the business owner’s perspective, having a website that can be changed quickly and easily is crucial. CMS, or Content Management Systems, are the most popular choice for businesses who don’t have full-time web design staff on hand. A professionally designed website that can easily be maintained is a business owner’s dream come true! CMS web sites are standard practice in our marketing agency.
